Below are the four key priorities for Ward 1 and my vision for enhancing our community.
Traffic Gridlock & Road Work
Ongoing construction and repeated excavation on Quaker Road have caused spillover traffic to invade residential streets. To alleviate this gridlock, we need enhanced project oversight, improved detour planning, and effective traffic calming measures.
My Approach: Intelligent Traffic Management
I will tackle construction delays by advocating for stricter oversight of regional contractors, ensuring transparent project timelines, and coordinating detour routes effectively. Additionally, I will champion the implementation of neighborhood traffic-calming measures to prevent speeders from using local side streets as shortcuts.
Infrastructure before growth
While new development brings excitement, it's crucial to prioritize the expansion of core services and roads before constructing new homes—rather than treating it as an afterthought for current residents.
My Approach: Proactive Infrastructure Planning
We must conduct comprehensive reviews of road and utility capacities before granting permits for new developments. Developers should contribute their fair share to ensure that existing taxpayers are not burdened with the costs of upgrading overloaded infrastructure in the future.
Supporting Local Business
Construction delays can significantly impact local businesses. I am committed to advocating for city support during these major disruptions.
My Approach: Safeguarding Small Businesses
I propose the establishment of a "Construction Mitigation Support" protocol that provides temporary signage, permit relief, and local marketing assistance for small businesses affected by extensive roadwork.
Furthermore, I will push for City Hall to prioritize contracting local companies for landscaping, construction, and other services, rather than outsourcing to municipalities like Toronto. We must invest in our own economy and support local businesses, ensuring that funds remain within Welland.
Livability & Parks
Growth should enhance our quality of life, not diminish it. I am committed to promoting balanced housing, revitalized parks, and ensuring your voice is heard at City Hall.
My approach: Community-driven growth
I will advocate for developer-funded green spaces, safeguard the unique character of our neighborhoods, and host regular Ward 1 town halls, giving residents a direct say in local council decisions.
A Message to Ward 1 Residents
If there is one thing I want you to know, it’s that you don’t have to settle for reactive leadership. Gridlock on Quaker Road, uncoordinated development, and strained local businesses aren’t inevitable—they are the result of poor planning and a lack of proactive oversight at City Hall.
Ward 1 deserves a strong, responsive voice that puts infrastructure and residents first before problems happen. But real change requires your voice, too.
What I ask you to do is get involved. Share your concerns, ask hard questions about how our city is growing, and hold your local government accountable. Growth should happen with our community, not to it.
