Spend ten minutes chatting with neighbours on their front porches or scrolling through local community groups, and one sentiment rings loud and clear: people are exhausted by high-level political posturing. While regional discussions frequently revolve around social crises that require broader provincial mandates, day-to-day life in Welland is governed by the decisions made inside City Hall.

When people discuss politics, national and provincial headlines usually dominate the conversation. Yet the decisions that impact your everyday routine—from the moment you turn on your tap in the morning to how your street is plowed after a winter storm—are made right here at Civic Square.

As a resident of Welland, you have the power to shape the future of our community. Municipal elections are our critical opportunity to make our voices heard on the issues that hit closest to home—from the streets we drive on and the parks our children play in, to how we protect our air, water, and green spaces.

When most people think of municipal politics, they picture a predictable cycle: a glossy flyer in the mailbox, a polite knock on the door every four years, and an avalanche of campaign promises. Once Election Day wraps up, the doors close, the email replies slow down, and residents are left wondering what actually happens behind closed doors at City Hall.

A sincere thank you to James Takeo for sharing such thoughtful, grounded insight into the future of Downtown Welland. As we look ahead, my sincere hope is that our incoming City Council will come together with a unified mindset—breaking down silos to support all wards together as one, recognizing that a strong, vibrant downtown core lifts up our entire community.

Municipal open houses often reveal a striking contradiction in urban development strategy: the proposal to construct residential neighborhoods on contaminated brownfields while simultaneously paving over prime agricultural land for industrial parks.

Tonight, I attended the City of Welland’s Public Open House at Civic Square regarding updates to our Downtown & Connected Districts Community Improvement Plan (CIP), Urban Design Guidelines, and Brownfield CIP.

At last night’s Council meeting—which dragged on for over three and a half hours—we witnessed yet another display of chaos, disrespect, and a complete lack of decorum in the chamber. Security had to escort a councillor out, Code of Conduct violations dominated the table, and constant disruptions derailed the focus.
